Advanced Engineering & Materials Sector

The Advanced Engineering and Materials (AEM) sector is a significant part of the regional economy. The sector comprises four sub sectors – aerospace, automotive, chemicals and advanced flexible materials. The HE institutions of the North West have a substantial amount of expertise across all of these areas and are key partners in the regional clusters.

NWUA works closely with the NWDA Sector Leader and Business Development Managers for the AEM sector. NWUA is currently part of the Working Group developing the  Manufacturing Strategy (pdf) for the North West following on from the publication of the national Manufacturing Strategy and ensuring that higher education aspects are considered as part of the strategy.

In addition, NWUA is represented on the Sector Investment Group which considers inward investment issues, developing the role that HE can play in this agenda.

NWUA liaises with the sector’s four Regional Cluster Organisations – Chemicals North West, North West Aerospace AllianceNorth West Automotive Alliance and  North West Texnet – when there is a higher education aspect to their work, a frequent occurrence given that they are all highly skilled, knowledge based sectors. The Cluster Organisations have strategies to develop their clusters and NWUA can assist with any HE issues around these.

Academic Advisor Network

NWUA currently has six Academic Advisors for the AEM sector, providing coverage across each of the sub-sectors. The Academic Advisors are:

  • Professor Djamel Ait-Boudaoud, University of Central Lancashire
  • Professor Dave Burton, Liverpool John Moores University
  • Professor Chris Carr, University of Manchester
  • Professor Peter Myler, University of Bolton
  • Dr Allan Rennie, University of Lancaster
  • Professor Keith Ross, University of Salford

  • Sector Research Capability Mapping

NWUA has previously mapped HE research capability and knowledge transfer activity across this sector. Previous capability matrices can be found here. More recent work has been undertaken with Chemicals North West and the North West Automotive Alliance to update this information for the benefit of businesses and others working in these sectors.
