Sport Sector

The NWUA sport sector agenda covers three key areas of interest:

Sport Industry Sector
This aspect of the NWUA sport agenda is focused on facilitating strategic academic engagement with the regional sport industry sector across the research, innovation, skills and knowledge transfer agendas. Iain Adams, University of Central Lancashire, is the Sport Academic Advisor to NWUA, with this expertise supplemented by an electronic network of wider academic expertise.

Key areas of engagement include working with the NWDA sector manager to facilitate HE sector input into the developing Regional Sports Strategy, and providing HE representation on the Sport & Leisure Sector Skills & Productivity Alliance (SALSPA), facilitating HE sector input into identifying and addressing the higher level skills needs of the regional sector.

Sport England Regional Agenda
NWUA also has an interest in the  Sport England North West agenda, with a focus on working to understand and maximise the contribution of the HE sector to the sport participation, physical activity and workforce development agendas. NWUA works in close liaison with the regional  University and College Sport Chair and sport professionals across the member institutions to facilitate a coherent and complementary HE approach to the Sport England regional agenda.

2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games
NWUA also has a role in ensuring the HE sector in the region is aware of emerging opportunities associated with the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games and, where appropriate, facilitates collective HE engagement. Within this context NWUA, on behalf of the fifteen member institutions, is engaged at both a national and regional level with 2012 Games structures. At the regional level NWUA provides HE representation on the North West Steering Group for the 2012 Games, which is part of the LOCOG Nations & Regions structure; through this group NWUA is working to identify and exploit opportunities for a North West HE sector contribution to the regional legacy framework.  At a national level NWUA engages with Podium, the national FE and HE unit for the 2012 Games. To facilitate communication, dissemination and engagement across the North West HEIs a NWUA 2012 Network has been established.
