The economic impact and potential of higher education institutions in the North
West: A report to the Northwest Development Agency (April 2009)
A report by SQW to NWDA, as part of the evidence base for the Regional Strategy
RS2010 The Economic Impact and Potential of HEIs in the North West shows that
overall, the HEIs in the North West and their graduates contributed c. 3.5
billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the regional economy in 2007.
The report outlines the replicable methodology for this analysis and provides a
breakdown of the contribution of aspects of HEIs activities to GVA. HEIs
importance as economy shapers through their roles in education and skills
provision; in research and knowledge exchange; and more generally to the
development of the knowledge-based economy through thought leadership are
highlighted. HEIs have significant roles as place makers, contributing to the
character and brand of the regions towns and cities, and through providing
other cultural, community and civic assets. One significant conclusion is that
the number of graduates from NW HEIs who stay and work in the region is the key
variable to improving GVA in the future. The report can be downloaded by
