Construction Funded Projects

Details can be found below of projects funded by the Pathfinder.

Round 1 funded projects

MSc/PgDip Construction Management: University of Salford
This project will develop a new employer-led Masters level programme that will provide the educational component of a NVQ Level 5, which in turn supports the attainment of a managerial/professional Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. CSCS is the largest competency card scheme in the construction industry, and is obtained through demonstrating on the job competence, through an NVQ or related workplace qualification. The construction industry has set a target of achieving a fully qualified workforce by 2010, and competency cards such as CSCS enable workers to demonstrate that they can do their job, and that they can do it safely.

The new programme at Salford University has been developed through specific employer demand identified through the National Skills Academy for Construction, and will involve extensive collaboration with employer partners throughout the design, implementation and evaluation of the project. Construction managers who undertake this programme will gain the underpinning knowledge for NVQ level 5, which they will then be able to translate into on-site practice. The scheme will be delivered in an online, modular basis, to meet employers’ demands in a flexible way. Current education provision at levels 3 and 4 provide the underpinning knowledge for the equivalent level CSCS card, but it is thought that this programme will be the first of its kind in the UK for Black CSCS (level 5) status.

An overview of the programme (pdf) can be accessed  here.

Full information on the programme is available through the  University of Salford’s external website.

Round 2 funded projects

Wigan & Leigh College – HNC Construction
This project will develop the Colleges’ existing part-time HNC in Construction. The current format for the provision is evening only attendance, over a three year period. Employers sponsoring students on this course have expressed a need for the duration of the course to be shortened and for students to learn in a more flexible way, particularly given the fact that many travel a significant distance to attend college. This project, therefore, will develop several modules on this course so they can be accessed online in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This will also result in the duration of the course being reduced from three years, to two; and will also benefit several students undertaking the College’s HNC in Civil Engineering, due to the fact that both HNCs share several common modules.

The VLE for this course will be fully operational from September 2009. Further information on the HNC Construction can be accessed on the College’s Website.

University of Salford – Construction Site Training Simulator
This project will develop and improve the learning capacity of an advanced Virtual Reality simulator, which will be specifically developed for learning related to Off-Site Construction Manufacturing. The simulator will be developed to use real-life scenarios, produced in conjunction with industry, and will also develop an intelligent tracking system, thereby ensuring all training will be individually tailored to each learner who utilizes the simulator. The Virtual Reality Simulator will then be utilized in the development of a series of CPD modules focused on Off-Site Manufacturing, and will be used to further enhance a new MSc. Advanced Construction Open Manufacturing. Both the CPD modules and MSc are scheduled for delivery to commence in September 2009.

Full information on the MSc Advanced Construction Manufacturing can be accessed here

Round 3 funded projects

Liverpool John Moores University – Foundation Degree, BEng & BSc (Hons) Building Services
This project aims to develop two new progression routes from an existing Foundation Degree (FD) in Building Services Engineering, which is currently offered in collaboration with Liverpool Community College. The two new progression routes will be a BEng (Hons) Building Services Engineering (which will aim to achieve Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, or CIBSE, accreditation) and a BSc (Hons) Building Services project management. The project will also review the curriculum of the existing FD to broaden its scope to include developing environmental technologies, and in light of revised National Occupational Standards, established by employers in the sector.

Further information on the two Hons degrees developed as part of this project can be accessed here:

Open University – Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules
This project will develop two CPD two short course modules at level 6 (Honours level). The courses will enable construction sector employees to update and improve their management of construction projects in a changing context by undertaking one or both of the modules. The modules will be developed in conjunction with employers, and will be delivered online with face -to-face workshops to ensure maximum flexibility. Module 1 is entitled ‘Effective Collaboration in Construction’ and will examine the need to integrate and collaborate effectively across firm and professional boundaries. Module 2, ‘Practical Leadership in Construction’, is targeted at those seeking to update and improve their leadership of construction projects in a changing social, technological, economic, environmental and political context.

These two courses were launched in July 2009. They can be accessed at these links:

University of Central Lancashire – Foundation Degree in Building Services & Sustainable Engineering
This project will develop a Foundation Degree (Fd) in Building Services & Sustainable Engineering. The programme will aim to offer flexible and accessible progression routes to higher education in order to address the Management & Leadership skills needs of the Building Services Sector, particularly the skill gap between craft and first line supervisory levels and middle management. This project will be informed by the developments and evolving National Occupational standards in Emerging and Environmental Technologies, and will provide a pathway to higher education for individuals employed in craft and technician occupations who do not currently possess current academic recognised credit. The FD is also designed to act as a bridge to higher level qualifications such as a BEng (Hons) degree in Building Services & Sustainable Engineering, which in turn provides students with the academic requirements for membership of the industry’s professional body, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Round 4 funded projects

South Cheshire College – Foundation Degree Construction
This project will implement a Foundation Degree in Construction, to be delivered at the college from September 2008, and validated by the University of Wolverhampton. The development will include the implementation of a fully accessible Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), enabling all students to access relevant learning materials remotely and in their own time. The programme development will be informed by ongoing employer engagement, and in particular through the College’s PACT (Partnerships and Construction Training) Forum, which comprises a number of significant local employers. The Foundation Degree offers several articulated progression routes onto HE level 3 programmes at Wolverhampton University, including: Construction Management, Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Property Asset Management and Real Estate Management.  An overview of the programme can be accessed here.

Further information on the programme can be found at the College’s website link.

Liverpool John Moores University – Foundation Degree Construction & Surveying
This project will develop a foundation degree in Construction and Surveying aimed specifically at employees of construction and property organisations. Accredited prior experiential learning will be encouraged as the main method of entry onto the programme, therefore developing opportunities for employees without formalised academic qualifications to progress onto HE programmes. The project will also seek to extend the opportunities for progression onto Higher Education by offering the existing Foundation degree as a collaborative programme to other local FE organisations.

This course has now been developed and validated for delivery from September 2009. The course will be delivered by Wirral Metropolitan College and Warrington Collegiate. Further information on the courses can be accessed on the University’s website .

Leaflets for the courses can also be accessed here: Wirral Metropolitan College and Warrington Collegiate.
